RGS Surrey Hills is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Mickleham, Surrey, admitting pupils from age 11 to 18. The school operated for decades as Box Hill School before joining the Reigate Grammar School Group and relaunching under its current name. With around 425 pupils, it occupies an unusually small position in the UK independent sector — deliberately so. It is also a founding member of Round Square, the international network built on Kurt Hahn’s IDEALS of Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership, and Service. That membership shapes the curriculum, the co-curricular offer, and weekend life. Pupils from over 30 countries make up the community, giving daily life a genuinely international character without the anonymity of larger institutions.
RGS Surrey Hills offers GCSEs, A-levels, and the IB Diploma (International Baccalaureate), giving families a genuine choice of qualification pathway into and through the sixth form. For international pupils needing a rapid UK qualification foothold, the school runs a One Year GCSE Programme, with fees from £12,435 per term (day), inclusive of ESL support and UK outings.
The dual sixth-form offer is the structural centrepiece. A-levels suit pupils with defined subject interests and clear university targets; the IB Diploma suits those who want breadth and the globally recognised 45-point framework. The 2025 IB pass rate was 94%, with an average point score of 31.3, above the global average. A-level results in 2025 recorded a 91% pass rate.
Sixth form fees for full boarding run at £19,110 per term (inc. VAT, 2026–27), with the headline annual figure from the 2025/26 data sitting at £52,500. All educational trips and visits are included in sixth form fees, with the exception of specialist field trips. Recent leavers have gone to Durham (Law), King’s College London (Social Sciences and Engineering), and Warwick (Economics, Politics and International Studies), alongside specialist routes in Cyber Security, Motorsport Engineering, and performing arts.
A-Level results
2025: A Level Pass Rate 91% (2024: 90%; 2023: 96%; 2022: 94%); A*-C 41% (2024: 53%; 2023: 68%; 2022: 83%). Sixth Form leavers placed at Bristol (Biomedical Sciences), Surrey (Business & Economics), Southampton (Philosophy), accountancy and finance routes UK and internationally.
The school offers full boarding, weekly boarding, and two flexi-boarding options (2 or 3 nights per week) across all year groups. Full boarding fees for Years 9–11 run at £18,335 per term; for Years 7–8, £15,670 per term (both inc. VAT, 2026–27). The small roll means boarding houses operate at a scale where staff know pupils individually. Round Square’s service and adventure programme threads through pastoral life, with pupils able to take part in international exchanges and community projects as part of the school’s network commitments.
Round Square membership brings a structured co-curricular dimension that goes well beyond standard school clubs. Pupils can take part in global and regional Round Square conferences, overseas service expeditions, and leadership projects, all framed around the IDEALS. Drama, music, art, and sport sit alongside these as part of the broader activities programme. The international make-up of the community means co-curricular groupings tend to be genuinely mixed by nationality and background — an observable feature of school life, not an aspiration.
The school sits in the village of Mickleham, between Dorking and Leatherhead in Surrey, close to the North Downs. The setting is rural without being remote. The M25 is accessible within fifteen minutes, and the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty surrounds the campus. The relatively contained site suits the school’s scale and gives outdoor and adventure activities a natural backdrop.
Gatwick Airport is approximately 25 minutes by road, the closest major international gateway for arriving pupils. Heathrow is around 45–50 minutes via the M25. London Victoria is reachable by train from nearby Dorking or Leatherhead stations, making weekend travel straightforward for boarding pupils.
