Felsted School is a co-educational independent school in the village of Felsted, North Essex, educating pupils from age 3 to 18. Established in 1564 by Richard Rich, 1st Baron Rich, it is one of only 12 founding member schools of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC) — a distinction shared by very few schools in England. Around 1,000 pupils attend across nursery, prep, and senior divisions, all on a single rural campus. The school holds HMC, ISI, BSA, and ISC accreditations and was named Boarding School of the Year at the TES Awards 2023.
The senior curriculum moves through GCSE in Years 9 to 11, then opens into a genuine choice at 16: A levels or the IB Diploma (International Baccalaureate), both offered within the same sixth form. Few schools of this size carry both pathways. A level results in 2024 reached 63% A*–A and 86% A*–B, well above the national independent sector average. The IB programme has attracted attention in its own right: Felsted ranked 23rd among UK schools for IB results in 2023, with pupils averaging close to 35 points against a global mean of 30.3.
Pupils choose between A levels and the IB at sixth form entry. Both pathways share the same facilities, enrichment activities, and pastoral support, so the choice is academic rather than social. EAL (English as an Additional Language) provision is available at £6,570 per year for pupils who need additional English language support.

Felsted offers full, weekly, and flexi boarding at senior level. From Year 5, the prep school offers full and weekly boarding. Senior full boarding (seven nights per week) is priced at £56,100 per year (2025/26), with weekly and flexi options at lower rates. The range of formats suits families who want flexibility as much as those after a traditional full boarding experience. Day-to-day life for boarding pupils is organised through the house system, which sits at the centre of the school’s pastoral structure.
Felsted Prep holds a Primary Gold Quality Mark for Science; the senior school has earned a Silver STEM award. Together, these recognitions trace a continuous thread of science provision from nursery through to sixth form. The 90-acre campus provides space for sport, arts, and a broad activities programme. Drama, music, and a wide range of team and individual sports are all available to senior pupils. The co-curricular offer is deliberately broad, in line with the school’s stated aim of a first-class all-round education.
The school occupies a 90-acre rural campus in Felsted village, North Essex. Nursery, prep, and senior buildings, sports facilities, and boarding houses all sit within a single contiguous estate. London is approximately one hour away by road or rail, which makes the location workable for domestic weekly boarders and international families travelling through Stansted or Heathrow.
London Stansted Airport is around 20 miles from Felsted, typically 35 to 45 minutes by car, making it the most practical arrival point for international families. London Heathrow is reachable in approximately 90 minutes by road. Central London is around one hour away.
